BSN Syntha-6 Edge Review

BSN Syntha-6 Edge is BSN’s leaner version of Syntha-6 for those athletes and bodybuilders who are looking for the same great taste but with leaner macros. With a lower carbohydrate and fat content, and less calories, it’s amazing that it still tastes just as good!

BSN utilises exclusive flavour and mouth-feel technology to produce the most mouth-watering protein shake, it’s pretty much a milkshake. We put it to the real test. One of our staff members always complained she’d never found a protein powder she liked the taste of. BSN Syntha-6 Edge changed this. After one shake it is now her go to protein powder. Let’s take a closer look at this life-changing protein.

Macronutrient Information

A typical serving of BSN Syntha-6 Edge is about 40g and contains approximately 150 Calories, depending on the flavour. This is an average of 50 Calories less than the original Syntha-6 protein.

Each serve provides 24grams of protein, between 4.6g-6g carbohydrates with 1.1g-2g sugar, and about 3.5g of fat. This is a huge reduction of carbohydrates in comparison to the original Syntha-6, which contains 14g-15g.

BSN have successfully provided more of what bodybuilders and athletes want, and less of what they don't. More protein, less carbohydrates and fats. There have also been minor changes to the protein blend compared to the Syntha-6 blend.

Protein Sources and Ingredients

The protein matrix starts with a blend of whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. This is similar to Syntha-6, but most likely in a higher percentage of total protein ingredients to maximise protein and minimise fat and lactose. By using whey protein concentrate and isolate the protein blend provides both rapid and longer-term amino acid delivery. It also contains a high dose of naturally occurring branched chain aminos (BCAAs) to promote protein synthesis (muscle growth).

Next is micellar casein, also included in the original BSN Syntha-6 time release protein blend. Micellar casein is broken down by the body slower than whey protein concentrate and isolate. The slower digestion time provides a steady supply of amino acids for up to 8 hours after consuming the protein shake. This allows Syntha-6 Edge to support protein synthesis for a longer period of time. It also prevents muscle breakdown that can occur when your body doesn't receive enough nutrients. It provides greater versatility for the product as it can be used any time of day to help the body recover, rebuild and repair muscle tissue.

The first new addition to Syntha-6 Edge is milk protein concentrate, replacing Milk Protein Isolate. Milk Protein Concentrate contains all of the proteins naturally found in milk (approximately 80% casein and 20% whey) making it significantly different from whey protein concentrate. But the importance of Milk Protein Concentrate in this product is questionable as it already contains Whey Protein Concentrate and Isolate, and Micellar Casein. Aside from adding to the mixability, texture, there is little benefit to its inclusion. BSN would have been better to have kept egg albumen in the blend to provide a medium digesting protein source to bridge the gap between rapid digesting whey, and slow digesting casein.

But it is the second new addition to Syntha-6 Edge that is the game changer. Hydrolysed Whey Protein Isolate provides even more diversity to the original Syntha-6 protein matrix. Hydrolysed Whey Protein Isolate is the most highly processed of all whey proteins. It is pre-digested, so it is rapidly absorbed, making it the ideal protein source for pre or post workout. The inclusion of Hydrolysed Whey Protein Isolate serves to increase overall protein content without significantly raising the carb, fat or calorie content to keep BSN Syntha-6 Edge an ideal choice for dieting athletes and bodybuilders.

The remaining ingredients have taste and functionality purposes. Sunflower oil powder is a natural ‘anti-foam’ to reduce the froth produced when the protein blend is mixed with water. Flavourings, thickeners and sweeteners from sucralose and acesulfame-K round out the ingredients list of BSN Syntha-6 Edge.

Taste & Mixability

Anyone familiar with BSN knows they take their flavourings very seriousl. Syntha-6 Edge is no exception. There are 7 mouth-watering flavours including: Chocolate Milkshake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Banana Milkshake, Cookies & Cream, Salted Caramel, Strawberry Milkshake & Vanilla Ice Cream.

Each BSN Syntha-6 Edge flavour mixes effortlessly using the recommended 120-150ml of water. 150ml of water per scoop provides a rich and smooth shake which is comparable to a milkshake or thickshake. While being thicker than most protein shakes, it is far from gluggy. In fact, the thickness is often a winning quality with customers who dislike thin, watery, shakes. The flavours are rich and creamy, with a sweet aroma that will fill the room and get everyone’s mouths watering. Salted Caramel is the perfect shake when you’re craving a “dessert” or “cheat meal”, while Banana and Chocolate are great for any time of the day.
