Best Pre is a pre-workout formulated for people following a ketogenic diet, it uses keto-inducing ingredient beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) to help your body burn fat for fuel & allows your body to get into a ketogenic state faster & more efficiently. Best Pre Workout supports increased strength and performance, increased mental focus and supports weight loss. BPI claim this is the “first ever ketogenic pre-workout”. We’ve certainly never seen one before so we’ll have to take their word for it. This is a smart move from BPI as using Keto and the associated ketogenic diet (low carb high fat) has become increasingly popular with athletes and individuals looking to increase performance and/or lose weight.

What is Keto?

The Keto diet goes against the traditional low fat diet and instead focuses on eating a higher amount of fat. What’s the catch? It needs to be healthy fats. Think almonds and coconut milk, not fried chicken and donuts.

The Keto diet aims to put your body into a state of ketosis – which means your body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy. Usually our bodies rely on carbohydrates for energy. When we eat carbohydrates our bodies produce glucose and insulin. Glucose is used as energy while insulin is used to process the blood sugar spike from the glucose. Since the body is using the glucose as energy, it doesn’t need the energy from fats, and the fat is stored. By lowering the amount of carbohydrates and therefore glucose, the body is put into ketosis and burns fat for energy instead of storing it.

The number one standout feature of Best Pre Workout is the inclusion of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) an exogenous ketone blend. Best Pre Workout contains 3 different forms of BHB – calcium, magnesium and sodium. The key feature of Best Pre is the inclusion of different ester forms of the well-known ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Altogether Best Pre includes 3 different forms, namely, calcium, magnesium and sodium. These are combined with medium chain triglycerides which are metabolised by your body for fuel and can promote increased caloric burn via fat oxidation. The Energy Blend contains Caffeine Anhydrous and CDP-Choline for increased energy, focuu and mental clarity.

People on ketogenic diets and those taking ketogenic supplements regularly boast increased focus and mental clarity, which is thought to be a result from the ketones produced in the liver supplying the brain and central nervous system with favourable energy.

Best Pre Workout definitely increases energy and focus but whether this is from the ketones or caffeine is debatable. This may depend on whether the individual is following a keto diet, and/or whether they have eaten carbohydrates or protein before their workout as these can promote an insulin response which will interfere with the ketones results.

The addition of caffeine can help ketogenic users to power on as your body tries to adjust during the low-carb diet. The formulation also includes added electrolytes to combat the fatigue of “keto flu. Low carb diets tend to drive more water out of the body.

BPI Best Pre Workout – The Bad Stuff

As the ingredient panel indicates, Best Pre Workout is made up of two proprietary blends so there’s no way of knowing how much actual ketones are in each 7g ‘ketogenic blend’. As mentioned before, the consumption of carbohydrates and protein may counteract the benefits of the ketones so this pre-workout may not be effective for everyone.

Ketone salts such as sodium-beta-hydroxybutyrate are notoriously known for their bitter and foul taste. BPI have worked some magic as Best Pre Workout has a very pleasant taste. There are 4 different flavours: Apple Pear, Watermelon Ice, Tropical Freeze, and Blue Lemon. Ketone salts are very water soluble so it’s not surprise that the pre-workout mixes well when combined with water.

We think this will be a great pre-workout for anyone following a low carb or ketogenic diet. It’s also a great option for intermittent fasting or fasted cardio.
