What's the keto diet?

The keto diet's becoming more and more popular in New Zealand. Many kiwis are jumping on the 'keto' bandwagon and seeing amazing results (thanks to the help of added supplements!).

A ketogenic diet is a high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet (similar to the well-known Atkins diet) except it works by sending the body into a metabolic state called ketosis. During this state, the body becomes highly efficient at burning fat.

When exercising, the body gets its energy from the carbohydrates we eat in our food. Once the body's used all of this up, it'll then begin to burn off our stored fat.

So, if we stop eating carbohydrates altogether, the body has no other choice but to move onto burning fat almost immediately (the body's forced into burning fat, clever right?!).

During this fat-burning state, the liver creates chemicals called ketones (a side effect when the body uses fat to fuel the body, rather than sugar or carbohydrates) which are used to help the brain function properly. Many people on the ketogenic diet report an improvement in their athletic performance as well as increased mental-focus and reduced hunger.

Ketogenic diets have many benefits and have been proven to help with health disorders such as heart disease, epilepsy, polycystic ovary syndrome, and acne.

Another bonus of the keto diet is its ability to drastically reduce blood sugar and insulin levels, which can be life-changing for people who suffer from diabetes.

Please note, we advise you to consult with a doctor before making any major changes to your diet.

What can I eat on the keto diet?

The great thing about this particular diet, is that you can still enjoy high-fat foods (in moderation, of course!) without the guilt or restrictions like many other diets. There's a wide variety of recipes on the internet you can use to create some delicious and nutritional meals at home.

Check out some of our recommended keto-friendly foods:

  • Meat and seafood
  • Non-starchy veggies (think, asparagus, broccoli, salad greens, capsicum and mushrooms)
  • Cheese
  • Avocado
  • Eggs
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Butter and cream
  • Coffee and tea (unsweetened)
  • Dark chocolate.

What are the best keto supplements for weight loss?

MCT oil

Medium-chain triglyceride or MCT is one of the most commonly used keto supplements to assist with weight-loss and weight management.

MCT's are mostly found in coconut oil and have been proven to release hormones that keep you feeling full. MCT's can be converted into ketones by the liver and used as an efficient source of energy for your brain cells.

MCT oil is commonly added to smoothies or used as a salad dressing - check out some of our most popular keto supplements such as our PureXen Keto MCT Oil or KETOGENIC KETONES.
