Egg Protein Powder - The many benefits & uses

Eggs are delicious, versatile and super nutritious. I don't think anyone would consider eggs overrated, they're sued in baking, breakfast foods and Kiwis eat an average of 230 eggs per year, each!

Tonnes of people, including athletes, competitors and trainers start their day with a helping of eggs in a bunch of different ways; fried, poached, scrambled or soft boiled with that yummy, runny yolk centre, okay I'm getting distracted!

Anyway, eggs have long been a staple part of the active persons diet thanks to, not only their versatility in the kitchen but also their protein levels, iron, vitamins and the fact that the whites are almost completely devoid of fat. That being said, eggs in the from of egg protein powder has long been in the shadows of its cousin - Whey Protein, the undisputed King of supplements. We'd like to put a spotlight in this under-utilised supplement and explain the benefits and uses of it, maybe you'll even consider adding it to your daily routine.

The difference between egg protein and whey protein

Whey protein, as you probably know is derived from cows milk. It is loaded with vitamins, minerals and beneficial peptides. Thanks to its milky beginnings, whey protein makes creamy, thick protein shakes but also contains lactose, which can cause digestive upset for some people.

Egg protein is made from, yup you guessed it, eggs! Because the powder is made from just the whites of the eggs, it is near fat-free and packed with protein.

Egg and whey protein also have different digestion speeds. While whey is considered a fast digesting supplements and something like casein is considered a slow digesting protein, egg proteins sit somewhere in the middle, so it keeps muscle protein synthesis going for longer than if you had whey on its own.

The benefits of egg protein powder

As well as their high protein content, egg whites contain a good amount of micronutrients and like all animal products, because they are a complete protein source, they provide all 9 of the essential amino acids that your body can't make by itself.

Also, egg protein is only second to whey as the highest source of leucine (the BCAA that does the most for muscle health).

Egg-white protein is an ideal supplement for people with lactose intolerance, sensitive stomachs or other dairy allergies as they're very easily digested and don't contain any of the lactose that whey or casein proteins do, while still providing all the benefits of an animal based supplement.

How to use egg-white protein powder

Jut like whey protein, this supplement can be used as the base for a delicious protein shake, by mixing it with water, milk of your favourite nut substitute like almond or coconut milk.

Because it's made up of eggs, this is a great baking supplement as well, that can turn things like pancakes, slices and cakes into protein packed snack alternatives without compromising on taste or texture.
