Top Five Fitness Myths Holding You Back

1. Running on a treadmill is better for you

This one doesn’t really make any sense at all, but so many people hear it in passing and take it for granted that it has spread like wildfire! Running is great for you wherever you do it, be it inside on a treadmill, outside on the street, through a park or in circles around the house - it makes no difference at all. The same stress is being put on your joints wherever you run, so don’t be put off going for a jog outside because of this one.

2. Sit-ups burn stomach fat

The truth is that there is no way to control where you lose fat, but you can control when! Crunches or sit-ups might not burn stomach fat, but they do definitely strengthen your abs. If you’re really looking to get rid of that fat then you want to be involved in a great cardio program and you want to build a bit of muscle with weights to boost your metabolism.

3. If you aren’t sweating, you aren’t trying

Sweating has nothing to do with how hard you’re working. Sweat is the body’s natural coolant - if your body isn’t overheating there’s no reason for you to be sweating at all. Light weight lifting and walking are both great ways to exercise and both unlikely to leave you panting and sweaty.

4. Working out too much will make a woman look too big

One of the most prominent myths (and excuses!) amongst women is that they need to do less intensive weight training than men or they’ll bulk up too much. The truth is that, due to lack of testosterone, it’s incredibly difficult for women to gain mass at the same rate as most men. Work with whatever weight is comfortable for you and don’t worry about gaining size because of it.

5. You’ll lose weight faster working out hungry

Unless you’re going for an emaciated look this season then you shouldn’t believe this myth at all! Working out hungry and starving yourself in general is more likely to lead to your body burning away more muscle than fat.
