Danika Bergersen – Racing Toward the World Stage

Danika Bergersen – Racing Toward the World Stage

Abbie Younger |

Danika's Journey

At just 17 years old, Danika Bergersen has already travelled further, raced harder, and achieved more than many athletes twice her age.

The talented BMX rider from the Cambridge region discovered her passion for the sport when she was only five years old after learning about a local school racing event at her nearby BMX track. Although she was initially too young to compete, the excitement never faded. A year later, her parents took her along to a local club night and she was instantly hooked.

By the age of eight, Danika was racing competitively and competing at her first New Zealand Championships, where she finished fifth nationally in her age group. It was an early sign of the success that would follow and for the natural talent Danika has.

Love For The Sport

What sets BMX apart from everything else for Danika is its intensity. "You rely only on yourself and your bike" she explains.

A BMX race can last less than a minute, but within those 35 to 45 seconds Danika
experiences explosive sprints, split-second decision making, technical obstacles and fierce competition against other riders all chasing the same finish line. "It's all about power, precision, and making quick decisions."

Training and Nutrition

To perform at an elite level requires commitment both on and off the track. Danika balances gym sessions, technical track work and mandatory recovery days as part of her weekly routine. Strength training focuses on developing the leg power, core stability and upper-body control needed to handle a BMX bike at speed, while time on the track is spent refining jumps, gate starts and race skills.

Just as important, is recovery. Danika places a huge emphasis on nutrition and hydration, understanding that what happens away from the bike is often what determines performance on it.

Like many young athletes, she also juggles training with school life. The challenge isn't
necessarily the classroom, but the hours spent travelling to training venues, many of which are more than an hour away from home.

"Sometimes it can be exhausting," she says, "but staying disciplined and focused on my routine helps me to keep improving.” It’s that same dedication that paid off in a remarkable 2025 season.

Recent Results

Danika opened the year in Melbourne at Track Attack, racing six tracks across nine days and claiming victory in an impressive 21 races. She followed that performance with a dominant showing at the Oceania Championships in New Plymouth, winning all five races and securing the title in the 16yr Girls category.

The New Zealand Championships in Invercargill brought new challenges, including difficult weather conditions and slippery corners, but Danika once again rose to the occasion, winning every race and earning the coveted New Zealand Number One plate for 16yr Girls.

The Opportunity of a Lifetime

Then came the opportunity of a lifetime. After months of uncertainty surrounding the cost of international travel, Danika arrived home one day to discover her entry confirmation and flights to Denmark for the UCI BMX World Championships waiting for her. "I was over the moon," she recalls.

Competing on the world stage offered far more than racing at home. Training alongside riders from across the globe, experiencing new cultures and seeing how BMX operates internationally gave her a completely different perspective on the sport.

Racing against the world's best in Copenhagen, Danika finished an impressive 26th out of 71 riders in her division — a result she remains incredibly proud of and rightly so. For many athletes, competing internationally can feel daunting but for Danika, it's something she embraces.

"New Zealand has such a small BMX community, so when overseas you're racing
different people every time." It’s just another opportunity for her to learn and grow as an athlete. Behind every successful athlete is a strong support network, for which Danika is quick to credit her family.

Support From Family

Her parents have spent years balancing full-time work with long road trips, early mornings and international travel to support her racing ambitions. Her younger sister has become an enthusiastic supporter too, attending events and even acting as lookout during sprint training sessions on local roads.

Their commitment hasn't gone unnoticed. "It made me realise how much my parents would do for me,” saying “[they] don't mind the late nights and the early mornings or the long travel if it’s for something I enjoy doing.”

Future Goals

As for the future, Danika's goals are refreshingly simple. Rather than focusing solely on
Olympic dreams or podium finishes, she wants to continue performing at her best, enjoying every opportunity BMX gives her and travelling the world while doing something she loves. "It's a very rare opportunity for some people, so it's awesome to have."

With another World Championships campaign in Brisbane already on the horizon and plenty of racing still ahead, Danika Bergersen is proving that passion, discipline and gratitude can take an athlete a very long way indeed. Her journey is only just getting started.
